Identification & Development

The work will be completed in four phases:

Phase I – Review Historical Data

Data was compiled through traveling the lake perimeter by boat and recording locations with hand written notes, maps and photographs of slope/ shoreline problem areas. There were 322 documented sites dating back to 1992 along with approximately 150 requests received from lessees along the shoreline.

Phase II – Develop Database and Catalog Locations into GIS Format

Utilized existing data to digitize locations of problems areas. 2006 LiDAR data was used in conjunction with ESRI’s 3D Analyst software to determine areas with greater than 2:1 slopes. A Microsoft Access database was developed to score shoreline conditions and aid in creating a project priority list based on the following criteria:

• Project Size
• Occupied Dwellings
• Structures (docks, sheds, etc.)
• Roadway Hinderance/ Public Access Concerns
• Erodability Concerns
• Risk to Public Utilities

Phase III – Utilize Pictometry to review current problem areas and identify new ones

Pictometry International was contracted to photograph the primary reservoirs within the MWCD Region with a final resolution of 4″. The flights took place in April of 2010 in “leaf-off” conditions to maximize view of the surface. The newly created GIS data from Phase III was then used to review potential projects for the 2010-2011 drawdown season.

Phase IV – Project Construction

Once projects have been prioritized, the Engineering Group will then begin the design process. Using a combination of OSIP LiDAR and high precision RTK GPS units, elevation data is collected and design plans are prepared. Depending on the project location, soil types and a variety of other factors, the best approach to repairing the failing slope will be determined.
