Ohio Department of Natural Resources has created and oversees a state designated water trail program. This program encourages public access development and maintenance along rivers and around reservoirs, promotes outdoor recreation use in the form of kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding, while increasing awareness of paddling safety and environmental health. For information about the water trails program, visit watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/watertrails
For more information about what a water trail is and the benefits of a designated water trail, see the Water Trails Fact Sheet.

Tuscarawas River Water Trail

The Tuscarawas River is a 130-mile long tributary to the Muskingum River. Beginning just south of Akron, it flows through four counties before joining the Walhonding River near Coshocton, to form the Muskingum River. The water trail takes paddlers through the center of urban living to the peaceful rural escapes of Eastern Ohio while passing historical sites and natural landscapes along the way. Whether you are looking for a quick jaunt between towns or a longer trip through quiet stretches of nature, the Tuscarawas River has it all.

The Tuscarawas River Water Trail was officially designated in August 2020 by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Paddlers can now find all of the information needed for a safe and enjoyable trip along the river. Look for signs with the water trail logo along the route to know which areas are public access. A paper brochure with information about access sites, hazards, stream gauges, and amenities along the river can be requested at the link below or picked up at one of the Water Trail partner locations.

*New access sites have been added since the printing of the original brochure in August 2020. The interactive map reflects the most up-to-date information below. Additional access site include Craig Pittman Water Trailhead in Navarre and Simonds Heller Park in Newcomerstown.

Kayak Programs

Kayak Atwood

The MWCD is excited to offer a variety of kayaking programs, providing  opportunities to try kayaking for the first time, explore the lakes on a leisurely tour, and learn how be safe while on the water.

Free Kayak Try-its

Free kayaking programs will be offered throughout the summer at our five Lake Parks.  Participants will receive a short introduction onshore, then try single or double kayaks near the shoreline for short periods of time.

Guided Kayak Tours

Guided kayak tours and moonlight kayak trips are planned throughout the summer.  Kayak tours are guided by park staff and offer a group experience on the water to discover the plants, animals, and history of the lakes.  Moonlight kayak trips are guided tours by the light of the full moon, June through September.

Learn to Kayak

If you have a kayak or are thinking about purchasing your own, the Learn to Kayak course is perfect for you!  Each lake will also host a Learn to Kayak class, which is a 3-hour course designed by the American Canoe Association and will include equipment and safety discussions, as well as on water paddling skill development.  Staff will also demonstrate what to do if the kayak capsizes in the middle of the lake. In order to ensure safe experiences, age and weight limits will apply for all kayak programs.

Poker Paddle

Paddle to locations around each lake and select cards to compete for the best hand and fabulous prizes, including a FREE KAYAK for the grand prize!

NEW – Private Group Tour

Schedule a tour just for your group! Choose your lake and topics, we do the rest. Minimum group size is 6 people.  Prices vary based on day, time, and group size.  Call 330-343-6647 for more information or to schedule a tour.

Kayak Rental

If you are looking to rent a kayak and paddle on your own, rentals are available at the marina located at each lake.
